Inspired by Max Siedentopf’s passport photo series, NPNC (無臉不回) explores the visual culture of queer dating apps, where headless torso photos and the expectation of “face pics” have become almost routine. The project begins with images that feel familiar within these spaces, but when opened, the bodies are unexpectedly paired with plush toy heads. This shift introduces a sense of humor while also disrupting the anonymity often associated with app-based interactions.
Beneath the playfulness is a more serious reflection on visibility, vulnerability, and the ways identity is negotiated online. The plush heads suggest an uneasy innocence, pointing to the reality that underage users sometimes enter these adult platforms and find themselves in conversation with grown men. By balancing comedy with discomfort, NPNC considers how desire, safety, and self-presentation intersect within digital queer communities.
Ultimately, the series invites viewers to look more closely at what is revealed and what is concealed, and to question the norms that shape how we present ourselves in the search for connection.
